Travel Information
Bohol, one of the Philippines’ many island provinces, is a favorite when it comes to vacations for being activity-filled. It never ceases to amaze with its geographical wonders (both natural and man-made), its white sand beaches are among the best in the country and it is also home to the world’s smallest primate, the tarsier.
What to try
The Loboc River Cruise is definitely one activity that you must try when you’re in Bohol. At the boarding area there are several cruises to choose from—the cruises are bamboo ferries with tables and chairs inside, like a restaurant. Lunch is served while cruising down the river. A scenic waterfall awaits passengers at the end of the cruise, as well as a song and dance number performed by a group of local children.
When in Bohol, Panglao Island is one place that you cannot afford to miss-its beautiful white sand beaches are an ideal place for one to unwind and experience the real tropical paradise. Watersports are also available at various resorts.
Attractions
Chocolate Hills is probably the first thing that comes to mind when one mentions Bohol. This unusual geological formation of over 1,200 perfectly cone-shaped hills is definitely a sight to see. Blood Compact Monument commemorates the pact of friendship between the native chieftain Sikatuna and Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. The sculpture at the site was actually made by National Artist Napoleon Abueva. The site also offers visitors an astounding view of the sea. The majestic Baclayon Church is known to be one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. This huge structure was been around since 1727, when it was built by Spanish missionaries. Coral stones were used for the church walls, which were carried and lifted by native force laborers through the use of bamboo. The church also has a dungeon where natives used to be punished for violating Roman Catholic rule.
Festivals
Sandugo Festival
Whole month of July The Sandugo Festival is a Blood Compact Commemoration, which is actually a treaty of friendship between two cultures and nations: the native chieftain Datu Sikatuna and the Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. This historical event dates way back to the year 1565. Street dancing competitions take place during the whole month, courtesy of the different public high schools in the province. One highlight of the festival is the Sandugo Oracles, which is a reenactment of the blood compact through song, dance, and pantomime. Other events include trade fairs, beauty pageants, group tours and youth camps, to name a few.
