  • Valentine’s Day gets its derived from Saint Valentine, a man who secretly held marriage ceremonies in defiance of Claudius II, who had forbidden young men to get married back in 270 AD.

  • When Valentine was caught and thrown in jail, he fell in love with a jailer’s daughter. Before Valentine was executed, he wrote the lady a letter signed “your Valentine.”

  • Cupid is believed to be the son of Venus, Roman god of love and beauty. Because of this, he is considered the messenger of love.

  • The heart is considered the source of all human emotions and so it is associated with Valentine’s Day.

  • Venus or Aphrodite, goddess of love, favored the red rose and was said to even be its creator, solidifying its status as the most romantic of flowers.

  • Over 50 million roses are given for Valentine’s Day each year across the globe.

  • From the moment chocolate was discovered it was considered valuable, divine and decadent, a "food for the gods".

  • Statistics tell us that 73% of Valentine’s Day flowers are bought by men, whereas women buy only 23% of Valentine flowers.

  • Valentine's is the single largest seasonal card-sending occasion aside from Christmas. Around 1 billion valentine cards are sent across the world each year.

  • Verona, the place where Shakespeare’s lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives approximately 1,000 letters every year to Juliet on Valentine’s Day.

  • A small percentage of US women (around 15%) send flowers to themselves on Valentine’s Day.

  • The antibiotic Penicillin was first introduced on February 14, 1929.

  • In the Middle Ages, people believed that the first unmarried person of the opposite sex you met on the morning of St. Valentine’s Day would become your spouse.
